In West Volusia, with school in session and Labor Day in the rear-view mirror, it’s the perfect time to check on summer tourism.

The executive director of the West Volusia Tourism Advertising Authority, Georgia Turner, is quite happy with the result of the summer tourism season, so far. Georgia said that the summers of ’21 and ’22 have been truly amazing.

Ms. Turner added that the last summer ranks the best and June and July were like they never experienced before.

The point is underlined by assessing convention development tax collections. The convention development tax collection was $543,394 for fiscal year 2019-20, and, for 2020-21, it was $ 607,047. For 2021-22, it’s already at $790,391. Still, in the fiscal year, two more months are to go.

With gradual fading of the pandemic from the face of earth, that number could keep going up in the coming days.
What attract visitors to West Volusia? Events like Preservation on Main Street acts as major draw. In six years, it was the first time DeLand had arranged the conference. Ms. Turner said that the conference in July brought around 200 people to downtown DeLand.

In August, she said that they benefited from NASCAR and Stetson students coming back. She defined the way Stetson’s move-in weekend and homecomings are particularly useful for the tourism sector.

If people are not visiting West Volusia for special event like a child going to college or a conference, they most likely are coming for an art show, air show, fair or festival.
