Watch: Rekindling an inter-family contest that featured their fathers in the 2000s, Thando Ntini, son of Makhaya, dismissed Tagenarine Chanderpaul, son of Shivnarine, during a West Indies tour game in South Africa.
Chanderpaul Jr, rewarded with a Test call-up last December, has had an exceptional start to his West Indies career. He began with scores of 51 & 45 on debut in Perth, before compiling an epic double ton against Zimbabwe earlier this month (just his third Test). He ended on 207*, beating his father’s career-best score (203*) and currently averages 69.66 from four Tests.
Thando is yet to make his South Africa debut but is making his name as a future fast-bowling prospect. He’s played for the South Africa U19 side, and also featured for the Titans and Dolphins in all forms of domestic cricket. He’s currently part of a South Africa Invitational XI, featuring against the touring West Indies side in a tour game in Benoni.
Opening the bowling alongside Codi Yusuf in the three-day practice game, Ntini looked in fine touch against Tagenarine. He went past the left-hander’s bat three times in a row in his fourth over, shaping the ball away from the opener. Tagenarine defended the next two, but lobbed the last one, a full ball, towards cover for a soft dismissal, ending with 1 off 21. Ntini exulted in jubilation, mirroring his father’s passionate celebrations from his playing time.
In fact, Makhaya dismissed Shivnarine seven times during their international careers (five times in Tests, twice in ODIs) between 2001 and 2008. Irrespective, Shivnarine had a fine Test record against South Africa, scoring five centuries in 23 Tests.
One hopes that the battle between the juniors continues for years to come.
