The mercenary organisation the Wagner group has called for an armed rebellion against Russia’s military leadership as President Vladimir Putin warned the group there will be ‘inevitable punishment’.
The organisation -organised by the militia’s chief Yevgney Prigozhin – initiated a coup citing he wants revenge for a strike from Putin’s forces which killed some of his men.
The 25,000-strong group have already claimed they have ‘taken control’ of the southern city of Rostov-on-Don, 600 miles south of Russia’s capital Moscow.
The private militia had been fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine but they have turned their back and made their way across the border.
