USS KIDD Museum offers new ship experience for residents

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Residents now have a chance to tour a not so modern ship, the Nao Trinidad. The ship sits along the downtown riverfront at the USS KIDD Veterans Museum.

“You don’t really get an appreciation with books and pictures because you don’t have a sense of scale. You come aboard and when you see how small this ship is, how exposed the crew was, how cramped the corners are – I mean you get an appreciation for what they had to go through many years ago,” said U.S.S. KIDD Veterans Museum Executive Director Parks Stephenson.

The 95 foot ship arrived at midnight and sits alongside the USS Kidd. It’s a 16th century Spanish built replica of the original Nao Trinidad which was the first to sail around the world.

Parks said the museum is always looking for ways to create new experiences for local residents, and hopes attendees will enjoy the temporary addition.

“At the museum we’re always looking for new exhibits, new experiences to give to the people of Baton Rouge and having this different era of ship just adds to the experience we can give to look into a different type of sailing that the public doesn’t normally get,” he said.

Visitors can attend the tour from Thursday, March 16 to Saturday, March 25, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and tickets are available for $25.

The purchased ticket will include access to the museum, the USS KIDD, and the Nao Trinidad. For the special tour there is one ticket available for adults and allows kids under five to attend for free. There’s no military or veterans discounts for the experience, added Parks.
