United Airlines last month (read more here) had a promotion that offered a 30% bonus from hotel points to MileagePlus miles conversion.
I partook in this promotion and converted 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points to miles due to their partnership, which yields an additional bonus of 10,000 miles for conversions at this level, and you end up with 30,000 miles. It was unclear at the time how the extra United conversion bonus would post, which I noted then, and now we have the answer.
Our Earlier Coverage:
I noted in the piece:
Now we have to wait to see if the 30% additional United bonus posts for the 20,000 miles or the combined 30,000 miles amount (I hope for the latter).
And now we have the answer:
United bonused the “Marriott Bonvoy transfer to miles” of 20,000 miles by 30% but not the “Marriott Bonvoy bonus” of 10,000 miles. It took less than a month for United to post the additional bonus. The conversion from Marriott to United was instantaneous.
The 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points converted to 36,000 United miles, which I consider a good deal.
This is an important thing to note when participating in United’s hotel points-to-mile conversion bonuses in the coming years, and it was unclear from the promo T&Cs how they deal with it.
You earn the conversion bonus for the baseline transfer amount from Marriott and not the additional 10,000 extra due to Marriott’s and United’s partnership.
