Sheffield United boss explains how Dean Henderson criticism helped Manchester United loanee

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has explained how his criticism of Manchester United loanee Dean Henderson has helped the young goalkeeper.

The 22-year-old is spending his second season in a row with the Blades, helping to guide the South Yorkshire side back to the top-flight and catching the eye in the Premier League.

Twelve matches into the campaign, Sheffield United find themselves flying high in the standings after frustrating the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal already this term.

However, it hasn't always been plain sailing for Wilder's side and Henderson was criticised by his manager after a decisive mistake in a 1-0 defeat to Liverpool in September.

His stinging words raised some eyebrows, with some believing he was too harsh on the young goalkeeper, but Wilder has defended himself from those critics and identified how similar actions last term saw Henderson's form improve, which ultimately led to promotion.

“I think the players know where they are if the approach is an honest one. I’m the biggest supporters of the players, by the way, I love my players. They’ve done everything and more for myself and the football club in the time that I’ve been here,” he told Sky Sports’ Goals on Sunday.

“There’s a lot of other talk that goes on, people pick out the bits and I got battered for it but I know what Dean was about. Last season we played at Aston Villa, we were 3-0 up with eight minutes to go and we were in a fantastic position.

“We needed to make sure we did the right things but we didn’t and Dean was part of that. After that, he kept 13 clean sheets and was a major, major part of our promotion last year.

“He’s a brilliant young goalkeeper, I’m delighted that he’s in the England squad and he’s got a fantastic future ahead of him but I know his personality, I know what makes him tick and would I do something that would upset him and not benefit him going forward? Of course I wouldn’t.

“That’s the approach and I think if you were to speak to our players, they prefer that approach. They know where they are and I just think sometimes that the game might be growing a little bit soft, in my opinion.”
