Too many mistakes, including late punt blunder, spoil Iowa State's upset big against Iowa

AMES, Ia.— During Matt Campbell’s introductory press conference at Iowa State back in 2015, the new Cyclones football coach got a quick lesson on the importance of the Cy-Hawk rivalry. As Campbell finished up answering questions from media members, a fan in the room had one last comment for Campbell.

The fan wanted to know if Campbell understood how important the annual game is.

Campbell does. That’s why Saturday’s 18-17 loss to No. 18 Iowa stings so much. It’s one of the few remaining boxes that Campbell still needs to check off. Campbell has shown he can beat just about anyone in the Big 12 Conference. He’s shown that it can compete for a Big 12 title.

But Campbell hasn't shown he can beat Iowa.

Campbell, who is in his fourth season at Iowa State, has already accomplished a lot. He’s brought the Cyclones back to prominence, guiding them to back-to-back eight-win seasons. Campbell, ended a four-year bowl hiatus with a win in the 2017 Liberty Bowl. A season later, Campbell took Iowa State to the Alamo Bowl.

In both seasons, he’s made Iowa State a contender in the Big 12 Conference. They even entered this season picked to finish third in the conference and as a sleeper selection to win it from many national pundits.

Saturday’s game with Iowa has no impact on how that goes. But it still doesn’t change how important this year’s game against the Hawkeyes was.

The national spotlight had turned its attention to Iowa State with ESPN’s “College GameDay” making an appearance in Ames. The appearance and the game were another opportunity for Campbell to show that Iowa State belonged in the national stage.

And they failed to capitalize on it. What may be even tougher is the missed opportunities.

One of the biggest came in the second quarter. With Iowa State leading 7-3, quarterback Brock Purdy took off for a run deep into Iowa territory. He fumbled the football and gave it to Iowa, which went 59 yards down the field and kicked a field goal to make it 7-6 at halftime. A 34-yard punt by Joe Rivera gave Iowa great field position at the end of the third quarter. And the Hawkeyes took advantage of it with a seven play, 25-yard scoring drive that ended with a 1-yard run by Nate Stanley to give Iowa 15-14 lead.

It got worse. Iowa State was marching into Iowa territory when the Cyclones drew a pass interference call on fourth down. But an off-setting penalty on Iowa State for holding ruined that shot. Iowa State eventually turned it over on downs. Then, with Iowa State having one last shot, Datrone Young ran into returner Deshaunte Jones on a punt return, giving Iowa the ball and the win.

Iowa State showed that it did make monumental improvements from its first game. The offensive line got better at times. The playbook even opened up. Purdy ran it. Iowa State offensive coordinator Tom Manning called for Purdy to throw a lateral screen to Jones who launched a 51-yard touchdown pass to La'Michael Pettway. But it wasn't enough. Again.

Campbell has had his shots in the rivalry. Every game, with the exception of Year 1, has been close. Iowa State even had a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter two years ago. But the lead disappeared before Iowa State eventually fell to the Hawkeyes in overtime.

Even though this game won't ruin Iowa State's season, it certainly spoils the big party on Saturday.
