BREAKING Leeds goalkeeper Kiko Casilla charged with racially abusing Charlton's Jonathan Leko

Leeds United goalkeeper Kiko Casilla has been charged by the FA over his alleged racial abuse of Charlton player Jonathan Leko.

The FA have been investigating the Spaniard since the incident which occurred in Charlton's 1-0 win over Leeds in September.

A statement from Leeds acknowledged the charge and revealed he plans to appeal the charge.

He would face a minimum six-game ban if found guilty, although he remains available to play with his appeal ongoing.

Casilla has until next Tuesday (November 12) to officially respond to the charge.

The statement read: "Leeds United Football Club acknowledges the charge from the FA today relating to Kiko Casilla and an alleged breach of FA Rule E3 during our Sky Bet Championship match with Charlton Athletic at The Valley in September.

Casilla has until next week to officially respond to the charge

"Kiko strenuously denies the allegation and has proactively worked with the FA during their investigation to date.

"The next step of this process will be a personal hearing, in the meantime Kiko will remain available for selection."

Whilst a six-game ban is the minimum punishment, there have been reports the FA could issue a harsh punishment to Casilla.

The Daily Mail have claimed he could receive a lengthy suspension of 8-10 games if found guilty, ruling him out until 2020.

Referee John Brooks was made aware of the alleged incident after the game, including the claims in his report prompting further investigations from the FA.

They have spoken to both Casilla and Leko, 20, and called in lip-readers and Spanish interpreters in a bid to gather as much evidence as possible.

After the game, Charlton released a statement which read: "Charlton Athletic can confirm that an allegation of racial abuse directed at Jonathan Leko by an opposing player during Saturday’s game against Leeds United was reported to referee John Brooks."

Losing Casilla would be a major blow for Marcelo Bielsa's side

Sheffield Wednesday striker Fernando Foristieri was handed a six-game ban earlier this season after being found guilty of abusing Mansfield Town's Krystian Pearce in a pre-season friendly last year.

The loss of Casilla if found guilty would be a major blow for Marcelo Bielsa's promotion hopefuls, with the former Real Madrid stopper already keeping seven clean sheets and conceding just eight league goals this Championship season.
