How it’s come together so quickly for LeBron James and Anthony Davis

Early results are in, and the Lake Show appears to be back.

After an offseason in which they overhauled their roster to partner Anthony Davis with LeBron James, the Lakers are off to a 5-1 start with the honeymoon still going strong.

James and Davis are both averaging more than 25 points per game, but it is the Lakers’ improved defense that has them buzzing. After a season-opening loss to the Clippers, the Lakers have won five straight and boast the league’s top defensive rating (96.5).

“Playing with a torn groin last year — even when I came back it was still partially torn — it was difficult to be able to move and shift like I’m capable of doing that defensively,” James told reporters after the Lakers’ 103-96 win over the Spurs on Sunday. “For me, I just take the challenge. I love being challenged. Coach [Frank Vogel] challenged me, AD challenged me, I challenged myself.

“I put a lot of hard work into my offseason by getting my quick twitch, getting my bounce back, getting my speed back, my reaction time back. My mind has always been there. That’s what it’s all about.”

James missed 27 games last year in his Lakers debut season and the team fell apart without him, missing the playoffs for the sixth straight year. They fired head coach Luke Walton and brought in Vogel, traded Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart and three first-round picks for Davis, and then filled out the roster with veteran free agents.

Perhaps most importantly, though, they got James healthy again, and it’s showing on both ends of the court.

“I’m playing injury free. I’m not injured. My quick twitch is back. My speed is back, my strength is back,” James said.

That presence is spreading down the roster.

“Well it’s contagious, and his commitment on that end of the floor has been a great surprise for us in terms of just how proficient he’s been,” Vogel said. “He’s leading the charge with care factor on that end of the floor. When he’s working that hard and caring that much about getting stops, it carries over to everybody else, and you see it on the floor.”
