John Stones explains Pep Guardiola outburst after Man City boss's public dressing down of defender

John Stones has given his side of the story after Pep Guardiola's very public dressing down of the Manchester City defender during the 5-1 Champions League victory over Atalanta at the Etihad on Tuesday night.

City maintained their 100 per cent record in the group stage tanks to Raheem Sterling's hat-trick and two Sergio Aguero strikes.

But it wasn't all good news for Guardiola as he saw Rodri limp off with a hamstring problem just before half-time.

The City boss turned to Stones to replace him at the heart of the defence but he was seemingly unready to take to the pitch, taking a few moments to adjust his shin pads.

Pep was furious with Stones

Guardiola was visibly angry, slamming a seat in annoyance, and Stones has confirmed it was due to the time the defender was taking to go on.

"I had them [shin pads] on but I just needed to fix them up properly," the England star told BT Sport. "Time is of the essence and that’s what he wanted."

Guardiola will be hoping for good news on Rodri, who has been used as a makseshift centre-half in recent weeks to ease the Blues' defensive crisis.

"Hopefully it will be 10 days if [his hamstring] is not broken," Guardiola added. "If it is broken it will be three weeks or one month.

"I didn’t speak with Rodri or the doctor just yet but looks like a hamstring. When one guy runs and puts their hand in the hamstring position, it is a hamstring. It looks like."
