What Newcastle United need from Allan Saint-Maximin ahead of crucial fixtures

Newcastle United 'have to find the finished product' from Allan Saint-Maximin but Steve Bruce acknowledges the Frenchman 'can do something that many people can't'.

The 22-year-old made his second successive start for the Magpies in the 1-0 defeat against Chelsea on Saturday after overcoming the hamstring issues which disrupted the start of his career on Tyneside.

Saint-Maximin has brought something different to Newcastle's frontline with his pace and trickery and has proved a crucial outlet on the counter when it comes to taking the black-and-whites up the pitch quickly.

The forward linked up with Joelinton on a number of occasions in the first 25 minutes in particular at Stamford Bridge, but failed to test Kepa.

Bruce will hope that will change ahead of a crucial run of fixtures against Wolves, West Ham, Bournemouth and Aston Villa.

“He’s a constant threat. He gets you on the edge of your seat and can do something that many people can’t," Bruce told reporters after the game.

"He’s a bit unpredictable and we have to find the finished product from him. But when you talk about Chelsea’s youngsters, you have to remember that he’s 22 as well. We’ve got a few young players who can only get better."

Saint-Maximin was one of five new signings Newcastle made last summer and Andy Carroll was the only new addition who was over the age of 25 and who had previously played in the Premier League.

Bruce is confident his new additions will find their feet in time after Newcastle came up against a number of those sides tipped to finish in the top six in their first nine games of the season.

“It’s the accumulation of points over a long, long season." he added. "We knew it was going to be difficult to start with, especially with the introduction of the players we’ve brought in. They need time to adapt and adjust, but they’ll get there."
