Man Utd transfer for Rakitic ‘unlikely because of family reasons’ as Old Trafford side warn rivals they will not be held to ransom over fees

IVAN RAKITIC will reportedly turn down a move to join Manchester United from Barcelona in January.

The Croatian international – who has featured six times for the Blaugrana this season – is believed to be available for around £35million.

Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic is a reported January target for Manchester United

It has been claimed that the Red Devils and Inter Milan have both enquired about a deal to sign the 31-year-old in the New Year.

Rakitic fuelled speculation that he could be on his way out of the Nou Camp after he insisted that he needs to play more.

Speaking last week, he told reporters: “I don’t know what will come now.

“It’s tough because I want to play and not just be part of the team. I will do everything possible to change my situation.

“I have two years left on my deal and there’s no better place to play than Barcelona, the best club in the world, but I need to play and not just enjoy walks around the city and the beach.

“I spoke with people at the club everyone knew I had other options. I want to fight so that the team see me ready to deliver on the pitch.

“I want to thank the fans for the affection they showed me this weekend, but if nothing changed, we will have to sit down and talk about my situation again.”

But according to ESPN, it is unlikely that the four-time La Liga winner will be moving to Old Trafford due to family reasons.

However they do report that United are willing to back Solskjaer in the winter transfer market, but will not overpay for players, and will not be held to ransom over fees.

United remain keen on landing Juventus striker Mario Mandzukic, 33, to provide competition for Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.

The Daily Express have claimed that the two clubs have reached a verbal agreement over a £10m deal for Rakitic’s compatriot.
