Josh Warrington stops Sofiane Takoucht in second round to retain world title

Josh Warrington destroyed Sofiane Takoucht inside two rounds in spectacular fashion to retain his IBF featherweight title.

Warrington was sensational as he dismantled Takoucht to hand the French challenger the first stoppage of his career.

After the disappointment of Warrington’s last win over Kid Galahad, this was the prefect response as he delighted his fans inside Leeds’ First Direct Arena.

Warrington floored Takoucht twice in the second round before referee Bob Williams waved it off six seconds before the end of the second round.

Josh Warrington made light work of Sofiane Takoucht

He has stretched his unbeaten record to 30-0 and he hopes to fight next back at his beloved Elland Road in the spring.

Warrington would love WBC champ Gary Russell Junior next and he deserves a big unification fight after this.

He had hoped this third defence of his IBF crown would be a unification clash in the US, but instead it was against the unheralded Frenchman.

He was also back at Leeds’ First Arena after having said goodbye after his last appearance here in June against Galahad.

Takoucht was dropped twice by Warrington

This fight felt anticlimactic and the crowd while noisy, was down on the numbers who packed out the Arena for the Galahad fight.

Warrington promised to entertain after Galahad’s spoiling tactics made their contest hard to watch and he began positively, landing a couple of body shots in the first round.

His power surprised Takoucht and he floored him in one of the neutral corners with a stinging right hand at the start of the second round.

Takoucht immediately got back up and was made to take an eight count by referee Bob Williams.

Takoucht was still reeling when Warrington floored him again with another right.

The poor Frenchman did not know what was happening and he desperately tried to hang on as Warrington closed in for the kill.

Warrington unloaded more shots on Takoucht, stunning him, and Williams rightly stepped in to end it and save him from taking further punishment two minutes and 54 seconds into the round.

After the disappointment of the Galahad fight, this was the perfect response from Warrington as he recorded his first stoppage in two years and only the seventh of his career.
