Juan Carlos Capelli, Vice President of the Longines Watch Company has a travel schedule on par with the international athletes and events sponsored by the brand, meaning he is on the road most of the year. Indeed he is one of Longines best assets, and after 25 years with the company, it is no wonder he is at the forefront at marketing and sporting events spanning across the globe. Since Longines' partnership with global showjumping events like the Global Champions Tour and the Longines Masters Series, Mr Capelli is likely to be in a different country every week during the tour. Always gracious, kind and impeccably dressed sporting his Blue Edition from the Longines Master's Collection, Juan Carlos is a renowned fixture in the luxury watch industry and now more than ever in the equestrian community. Here, he discusses Longines bond with the equestrian and sporting world, to why a smart phone will never take the place of a timepiece.
- Longines has a strong affinity for showjumping and supporting equestrian events. Why this sport?
Longines has always been passionate about equestrian sports. In 1878, Longines produced a chronograph engraved with a jockey and his mount that was used in New York racetracks as early as 1881. And in 1912 already, the company partnered for the first time with an international show jumping competition in Portugal. Since then, Longines’ commitment to these sports has never ceased to grow. To this day, we continue to offer precision, know-how and experience in sports timekeeping and over the years, the brand has created stable, lasting relations with the equestrian world.Longines Watch Co. ltd
- You sponsor scores of events over the course of the year. Your particular favorites and why?
I cannot name only one as we are partnering so many wonderful events and I had the chance to witness so many great sport moments.
- Favorite thing about show jumping?
I love how riders provide the perfect mix of elegance and performance, two values dear to the brand. And show jumping is one of the rare sports where men and women compete together. A unique quality that is mirrored in our collections where 50% of our watches are dedicated to ladies.Longines Watch Co. ltd
- Were you always so involved with the equestrian world
When I was young, I used to ride as a pastime. Today, I work and travel too much to ride anymore, so I am glad to be able to maintain a link with these sports.
- The Longines Equestrian Collection is such a special addition to the classics. What is your favorite Longines timepiece and why?
For the moment being, I am always wearing the new blue edition of The Longines Master Collection. It’s such a classic with a hint of a fashionable touch with its blue dial and blue strap. But I must admit that I love all Longines models.
- There are so many gadgets that tell us the time these days. Why do you think timepieces have kept their value and appeal in an age of smartphones?
Smartphones and watches are two completely different products. On one side, you have an electronic product, on the other side, you have a product that suits you and gives you an identity. Today a Longines watch is more and more considered as a status symbol even if it is also still a timepiece giving the time and precision.
- One thing you should never do to a timepiece.
You shouldn’t keep it in a drawer, waiting for the right occasion to show it. Watches are made to be worn.
- One thing you should always do with your timepiece.
Just as with any other precision instrument, a watch needs to be maintained regularly to ensure faultless performance. We can rely on our worldwide Service Centers or authorized dealers to take good care of your timepieces.
- One thing you are looking forward to this autumn.
Longines is present in more than 400 events all over the year, so we are looking forward to many incredible sport moments, be it in the beginning of the Ski world cup, in Archery, in Gymnastics, in Racing or of course in Show Jumping.
- Where is your next trip?
I am flying to Barcelona to attend the finale of the Longines FEI Nations Cup™ Jumping, a great series of which Longines became Title Partner as part of a long-term agreement with the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI).
