Something big is about to happen to Stretford Public Hall

A Grade II listed former music hall will be renovated thanks to £68,000 of heritage funding.

Stretford Public Hall, built by John Rylands in 1878, will be given a new lease of life with the cash from the Architectural Heritage Fund.

The funds will be used to modernise sections of the building with the aim of making it the biggest cultural space in Stretford.

Since securing community ownership of the hall in 2015, volunteer group Friends of Stretford Public Hall have already renovated part of the ground floor of the building.

The space is now home to 30 co-workers who share the space and the studios on the ground floor.

Earlier this year, a community fundraising initiative managed to raise £256,000 for the hall in just over one month with more than 800 people donating to the cause.

A spokesperson for Friends of Stretford Public Hall said: “We are over the moon to be one of the projects lucky enough to secure funding from the Architectural Heritage Fund.

“It’s a huge boost for us to receive this support and a testament to all of the community activists and volunteers who’ve worked so hard over the past few years to save Stretford Public Hall.

“The funding will support our ongoing renovation of the hall and its large ballroom. We’re really looking forward to working with our new architects, Buttress, to carry out the renovations early next year.”

The council agreed to let a group of volunteers run the Hall after their succesful campaign

The Architectural Heritage Fund is supported by the Government’s Department for Culture, Digital, Media and Sport and renovation of the hall is in line with Trafford Council’s policy of regenerating high streets, particularly in Stretford.

The council is supporting renovation projects across Trafford through its Future High Streets fund.

Helen Whately, the Government’s Minister for heritage, arts and tourism, said: “High streets and town centres are at the heart of our communities and we want to see them thrive and prosper. This new fund is part of a wider £110million commitment from Government to breathe new life into our high streets.”
