Girl, 4, orphaned after parents drowned on holiday is consoled by brave sister

A four-year-old girl orphaned after her parents drowned in a holiday tragedy is being consoled by her brave big sister and devoted family members.

Distraught teen Maicee, 15, helped break the news to little Aveyja that mum Kim Fletcher, 33, and dad Danny Johnson, 34, had died on Sunday while in Zambujeira do Mar, in the south-west of Portugal.

Yoga teacher Kim, who was reportedly four months pregnant, got into difficulties while in the sea and former musician Danny heroically rushed into the water to try and save her.

But the couple from Stoke-on-Trent disappeared from view as they swam back to shore.

Nearby surfers went to their aid and tried to revive them, but tragically they had already gone into cardiac arrest and were pronounced dead at the scene.

They "loved life"

The couple's deaths have left a community in mourning and tributes have been paid to the "beautiful souls" who "just loved life".

They had recently set up a meditation workshop to help other people enjoy and appreciate the world the same way they did.

Teen Maicee, who Kim had during a previous relationship, has been described as a "total credit" to the couple because of the strength she has shown since the tragedy.

One friend said they would be "super proud of her."

Hundreds of kind-hearted strangers have also donated thousands of pounds to a fundraising page for the young girls.

The £8,000 target was smashed in less than 24 hours leaving the family "overwhelmed". The money will be used to pay for Kim and Danny's funeral and a memorial.

The cash will also go towards supporting Maicee and Aveyja and hopefully give them a Christmas they deserve.

The pair were "beautiful inside and out"
Their deaths have shattered family and friends

Danny's cousin Bobby Johnson told Mirror Online: "We're absolutely overwhelmed by the amount of people Danny and Kim's story has touched.

"It's heartbreaking thinking about the fact their two girls will have to grow up without their parents.

"Everyone wants to do their absolute best to make sure Maicee and Aveyja will be OK and well looked after."

He added: "It's such a warm feeling knowing that people we've never even met are getting involved and helping out in any way they can.

"We just want to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts who have donated and left their kind words of support."

Danny's friend Ben Cook, who set up the fundraising page, has also told how the kindness of strangers has been a huge comfort to grief-stricken relatives.

He told the Mirror: "The response has been fantastic, the family can’t believe how many kind words and messages are being left.

"I set the page up in an emotional state and fear I may have underestimated the costs a little.

"They were the light and together they shone and everybody knew of it," said friend Steph

"The aim is to cover the funeral costs, create a memorial like a bench or something, but mainly to support the children.

"Christmas is around the corner and I was hoping to raise enough to see them through the next few months and into the festive season."

Ben added: "The couple meant so much to me and so many others. They’ve helped people turn their lives around and helped others achieve life goals and dreams.

"Maicee is obviously distraught, but she’s been solid as a rock and played a massive part in breaking the news to her younger sister Aveyja.

"I wish I could show the strength she is showing right now.

"She’s a total credit to the couple, and I know Kim and Danny would be super proud of her."
