A Newcastle city centre Wetherspoon pub will close for four months as it undergoes a £1m refurbishment.

The Five Swans, in St Marys Place, near Haymarket is set to shut its doors on October 21 - and will not reopen until February 11 2020.

Staff will be deployed to other Wetherspoon pubs in the region, during the closure for the work, and will return for the reopening.

The popular pub, which first opened as a Wetherspoon in March 2011, is undergoing a 114-day refurbishment project, as well as an extension to the customer area.

The project will see the development of the existing disused first floor area, to form an additional 1,900 square feet of customer space.

The existing ground floor customer area will be completely refurbished, including new colour scheme, new carpets and polished timber floors, as well as re-upholstered furniture.

Behind the scenes, the kitchen is being extended into the yard area, at the back of the pub, and the cellar is also being increased in size.

New staff facilities are also being developed, on the first floor of the premises.

Pub manager Leanne Surtees said: “Wetherspoon is spending £1million on the pub, providing further substantial investment into the area.

“Myself and my team will look forward to welcoming customers back into The Five Swans, in February 2020, and we are confident that they will be impressed by the refurbishment and extension of the pub.”
