Akron to unveil ‘aggressive’ snow, ice removal strategy after last winter’s sluggish plowing

AKRON, Ohio -- The city of Akron is set to reveal an “aggressive, new snow and ice strategy” at a news conference on Wednesday morning.

According to a media advisory, city officials including Mayor Dan Horrigan, Council President Margo Sommerville and Director of Public Service John Moore will discuss the city’s plan to clear the streets this winter.

Last winter, the city was slow to plow and salt roads, especially during major snow storms. City plows were out around the clock during Winter Storm Harper in January, but residential streets weren’t cleared for days, resulting in hundreds of residents voicing complaints and a public apology from the city.

“We have failed to provide a timely level of service to all city streets in response to this storm, and we are sorry,” the apology read.

At the end of January, Sommerville established a task force to review the city’s procedures for removing snow and ice and to recommend improvements.

The task force in March issued 10 recommendations for more efficient plowing, including some changes expected to be in place for the 2019-20 winter season, and other long-term improvements. A spokeswoman from the mayor’s office previously said his administration was “fully supportive” of the recommendations and planned to implement them.

The recommendations included the purchase of 10 additional trucks, one for each ward, enforcing parking ban regulations, evaluating truck routes and reopening the maintenance facility on Copley Road.
