Vernon Hills police are investigating an aggravated assault after they responded Tuesday morning to a report of shots fired near Butterfield Road and Route 45.
According to a statement issued by the Vernon Hills Police Department, the call came in at 8:45 a.m. for a possible gunshot near a home in the Westwood subdivision, and an investigation found the offenders had left the area.
Several schools, including the Vernon Hills High School campus and Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, and some daycare facilities in the area went on a temporary soft lockdown that was lifted after about an hour.
According to the statement, a preliminary investigation found there was a dispute between non-residents that resulted in one shot fired from a handgun into an unoccupied, parked vehicle. Police believe this was an isolated incident with no immediate threat to the community, and it remains under investigation.
Stevenson High School does not have a “soft lockdown" policy, but instead issued a closed campus order for potential threatening situations outside of campus, according to the school’s website. In a closed campus situation, classes continue as scheduled.
The only change from normal procedure is that students must stay inside the building to move between classes. Also, vehicular traffic is prohibited from entering or exiting the campus while the order remains in effect, according to the school district website.
