A HUBBY took his dementia-stricken wife out of a care home and killed her before taking his own life, cops believe.
Richard Sergeant, 71, was said to be heartbroken watching childhood sweetheart Jane, 67, slowly deteriorating.
The retired teacher picked her up for a planned “day trip” on Wednesday from the Bryn Ivor Lodge in Newport and took her back to their £450,000 former family home in Pwllmeyric, near Chepstow.
It is unclear how they died but it may have been from an overdose.
A source said: “He was the most loving and dedicated husband anyone could ask for.
“He would visit her at the home every day and bring her fresh flowers all the time for her balcony and make sure she was completely comfortable.
“But for a long time he complained that Jane wasn’t getting the care she deserved from staff.
“He felt she was not being stimulated enough through lack of activity and was basically rotting away in front of his eyes.
“Jane’s condition was getting worse – but he couldn’t bear seeing her waste away like that anymore.
“He took her out for what was meant to be a day trip on Wednesday before giving her an overdose in bed.
“It’s so, so sad.”
Neighbours of the couple told how two police cars pulled up outside the four-bedroomed property on Wednesday.
Soon after a silver hearse arrived to take the bodies away.
One said: “They have lived her for more than 20 years, they are nice people but no one here knows them well.
“They are private people, they will wave if you see them in the garden or if they pass by in their car but that’s about it.”
