Cops: Gun owner draws weapon following Blue Line assault

Chicago Tribune 1 week ago

Chicago police on Wednesday questioned and later released a concealed carry gun owner who drew his weapon following an attack on another person aboard a downtown Blue Line subway train.

The incident began with an argument between two 29-year-old men aboard the Blue Line train that escalated into one man punching and kicking the other, police said, citing early reports. The attacker then allegedly took some personal items from the man he was hitting, a police spokesman said.

A third man who witnessed the attack approached the attacker on the platform of the LaSalle Street station and pulled a handgun, holding the man until police arrived. The witness was a legally licensed concealed carry permit holder, police said, but state law prohibits CCL holders from bringing concealed firearms on public trains and buses, or any public facility “under the control” of transit agencies.

Both the alleged attacker and the gun owner were taken into police custody, but the owner was released without criminal charges. The alleged attacker remained in custody pending charges Wednesday afternoon, said police spokesman Anthony Spicuzza.
