Shirley Ballas: ‘They make it up’ Strictly judge hits back at Anton Du Beke feud rumours

Strictly Come Dancing head judge Shirley Ballas has denied she has a feud with Anton Du Beke and instead says that publications have simply invented the claims.

Speaking to Radio Times, Shirley, aged 59, said that “they just make it up”.

She said: “They just make it up! They want to make a feud with Anton, who I’ve known for 30 years!”

She went on to say that Anton is kind and dismissed rumours that she is jealous of young women on the dancing competition show.

The judge explained: “Anton does not have a bad bone in his body.

“Or it’s ‘Ooh, you don’t like Emma [Weymouth, who was voted off by the judges in week seven]... She doesn’t like beautiful young women.

“Of course I do! I love the youth! I love to see success! Sometimes I wonder, if I was a man in that position, would I get half the criticism I get? Seriously?”

The row rumours with Anton were sparked back in November when they appeared to be fuming at one another following his rumba with his celebrity Strictly partner Emma Barton.

Shirley began by calling Emma “tall” and “elegant” but then warned she wasn’t as impressed with her dancing.

A visibly frustrated Anton told her: “There’s no need for you to say any more – you’re welcome to say nothing else.”

He then disagreed with her criticism of their dance.

Shirley defended her critiques and said: “The first thing required in any dance is movement to music, you have to stay on time!”

Despite them appearing to argue on camera, Anton went on to laugh off the incident and said he was simply “teasing” Shirley.

Speaking on This Morning he told Holly Willoughby and Philip Schofield: “I just sort of laughed because I was sort of teasing her a bit really.

“She looked down at her pad and I thought ‘Hello, there’s a list. We’re in big trouble here.’ So I was just teasing her, really.”

Meanwhile Shirley has had a tough few months health wise.

She had her breast implants removed in October following a cancer scare.

Joined by boyfriend Daniel Taylor, she told Lorraine Kelly about her decision to have the procedure.

She said: "I just think, where was your mind? What pushed you to do that?

"I won't blame dance for the way I felt but there were people in dance that made me feel uncomfortable, and I had really low self esteem."

Strictly Come Dancing airs on Saturday at 7pm on BBC One.

Shirley Ballas' full interview is available in the latest issue of Radio Times.
