No Quid Pro Quo claim, Sondland testimony: Darcy cartoon

Cleveland 2 weeks ago

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Despite President Trump’s denials, quid pro quo being central in Ukrainegate has already been established, in more ways than one.

Gordon Sondland, a pivotal player in Trump’s attempted Ukraine shakedown, had his own quid pro quo play with Trump. Sondland, a political novice and hotel executive, was named Ambassador to the European Union after contributing $ 1 million to the 2016 Trump campaign.

Sondland’s contribution to Trump’s 2020 campaign appears to be acting as a water boy in Trump’s attempt to get Ukraine to announce an investigation of Joe and Hunter Biden in exchange for military aid Congress had already ordered.

Quid pro quo is a latin term and is defined by Merriam Webster as “something given or received for something else.” Wikipedia describes it as “an exchange of goods or services, in which one transfer is contingent on the other.”

The alleged solicitation Trump faces impeachment for also fits the broad political definition of bribery that the U.S. Constitution prohibits.

Tuesday, four more witnesses confirmed in testimony before the House Impeachment hearing that Trump’s interaction with Ukraine involved what would be defined as quid pro quo. Several of the witnesses testified that Sondland had made clear that military aid was in fact contingent on Ukraine publicly opening an investigation of the Bidens.

Sondland testifies before the Impeachment hearing today. He has been so implicated in the scandal, it has been speculated that Sondland may ‘plead the fifth.' Facing a potential perjury charge, Sondland had already revised testimony given in private to Congress. There is also a possibility an immunity deal may be sought for Sondland as his actions could subject him to multiple federal charges.

It’s expected Sondland will be asked about the alleged cell phone conversation he had with President Trump in a Ukraine restaurant, overheard by others at the table. Sondland is alleged to have told those at the table that Trump didn’t give a “S---” about Ukraine. That he only cared about them investigating the Bidens.

In his opening statement, Sondland will say he was acting with the authority of The White House and the State Department. Further implicating Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Reported this morning is that Pompeo is seeking an exit from the State Department to run for the U.S. Senate from Kansas. Will Kansas really want as their Senator someone mixed up in Ukrainegate who did not stand behind State dept. employees? Looking like Pompeo timed his Trump admin exit too late.

One of Sondland’s potential defense arguments would be that as a political novice working for a president who was a political novice, he was unaware his actions amounted to violations of the U.S. Constitution and federal crimes.

President Trump has said there was “no quid pro quo.” It’s only true there is no “pro," because Trump and Sondland have acted like amateurs.
