Pizza Express Woking: TripAdvisor suspends reviews after parody Prince Andrew entries

Evening Standard 3 weeks ago

TripAdvisor has barred any new reviews on its Pizza Express Woking page, after receiving an influx of Prince Andrew parody submissions.

The site was flooded by fresh entries after the Duke of York shared a “weirdly distinct” memory of a trip to the Italian chain’s Woking branch in 2001 during a BBC Newsnight interview.

He said he could not have had sex with 17-year-old Virginia Giuffre on March 10 that year because he had been at a Pizza Express party in Woking - “a very unusual thing for me to do”.

Within minutes of hearing the eyebrow-raising alibi, pranksters took to TripAdvisor to write comedy reviews on behalf of the duke.

“Excellent! I remember distinctly visiting here on the 10th of March 2001. It was delicious and far preferable to drinking with young women in a nightclub…,” read one five-star entry.

“I’ve eaten here with my child and although the pizza was very hot I didn’t sweat. I can’t due to my time in the Falklands,” wrote another.

The fake submissions referenced other parts of the televised interview, in which he claimed to suffer from a medical condition which prevented him from sweating, and the allegation he bought drinks for Ms Giuffre in London’s Tramp nightclub.

But the comic reviews for the Woking restaurant have since been deleted and visitors to the site are currently blocked from posting new entries.

A message on the website explains: “Due to a recent event that has attracted media attention and has caused an influx of review submissions that do not describe a first-hand experience, we have temporarily suspended publishing new reviews for this listing.

“If you’ve had a firsthand experience at this property, please check back soon - we’re looking forward to receiving your review!”

Staff at the Pizza Express may not be thrilled by the move since, rather than its recent stream of glowing accolades, the site is now topped by two and three-star reviews.

The most recent, posted just days before Prince Andrew’s interview was aired, states “Waitress seemed to see baby as inconvenience and had a face like thunder the whole time. Food was great but the service is really letting the place down!”

The Standard has contacted TripAdvisor for comment.
