Chicago police on Sunday sent out a community alert notifying older homeowners of a series of ruse burglaries in the Deering police district.
Authorities said a man who drives a black Jeep has been knocking on the doors of older homeowners under the guise of notifying them about some damage to the property, with the goal of gaining entry. Once inside, he steals what he can from the residence, officials suggested.
The man is described as about 5 feet to 5 feet, 2 inches tall and roughly 50 to 60 years old, police said.
“If anyone approaches you for home repair or damage to your property, please be cautious,” the community alert states.
It also advises to keep the outside perimeter of your home well-lit, to report suspicious activity to police immediately, keep windows and doors secured, and to immediately repair any broken windows, locks or doors.
If you have video surveillance, save and make a copy for investigating detectives, and don’t touch anything if you become a victim — call police immediately.
