I take personal and professional offense to the accusation of First Year Cleveland, as reported Nov. 8, that the death rate of African-American infants less than 12 months old is due to 400-year-old racism (“Racism to blame for deplorable mortality rates among African American infants, group says”).
There are many factors involved with maternal/fetal outcomes. As a caregiver of expectant moms for more than 30 years, I can never remember a case of any doctor, certified nurse practitioner, nurse, or other caregiver disregarding the feelings, concerns, pains of patients prenatally or while delivering. Race has nothing to do with this. Everyone wants a healthy baby!
