Winter storm watch on horizon for Cuyahoga County, snow belt areas: Cleveland, Akron weather

CLEVELAND, Ohio — It’s about to look a lot like Christmas in Northeast Ohio ... more than two weeks before Thanksgiving.

The National Weather Service has a winter storm watch set to go into effect at 4 p.m. Monday for Cuyahoga, Ashtabula, Geauga and Lake counties. Rain showers are likely through the day, but that is expected to change to snow late in the day Monday as temperatures head steadily down.

By early Tuesday morning temps will be in the 20s and there is a 100 percent chance of snow. There could be about 5 inches on the ground in Cleveland by the morning commute on Tuesday, according to the Weather Service. Snow is expected to continue through the day but accumulations won’t be as heavy.

It will be worse in the snow belt, of course. Heavy snow is possible and some areas could get more than 8 inches. The lake-effect snow could continue into Wednesday.

Akron isn’t off the hook. More than 3 inches of snow could be on the ground Tuesday morning and another inch could fall during the day.

Cold weather settles in on Tuesday, with highs in the upper 20s in both Akron and Cleveland. Tuesday night will be very cold, with lows around 14 in Akron and 18 in Cleveland.

The winter storm watch will remain in effect for most of the day Wednesday, but will be warmer. Highs will be around 30 in Cleveland and Akron. Partly sunny skies are expected in both areas.

The snow shouldn’t stick around too long. Temperatures will climb back into the 40s by Friday and into the upper 40s over the weekend.
