Death in Paradise: What happened between Humphrey and Martha?

Express 2 weeks ago

Death in Paradise is going to be returning for its ninth series in January next year where new arrival Detective Neville Parker (played by Ralf Little) will be taking on the leading role. Saint Marie has seen a few detectives over the past eight years, including Detective Goodman (Kris Marshall), who worked closely alongside Martha Lloyd (Sally Bretton). So did anything happen between Goodman and Lloyd in the BBC show?

What happened between Humphrey and Martha in Death in Paradise?

Disorganised and accident-prone detective Goodman arrived at Saint Marie in 2014 and it wasn’t too long before he literally bumped into an old acquaintance in the shape of Lloyd.

Throughout the next few years, viewers watched how their friendship blossomed and their unresolved feelings grew for one another.

However, Lloyd had to move back to London for her job, leaving Goodman behind on the island.

But in the sixth series, a case took the team to London.

Taking his chance while he was in the country, Goodman told Lloyd he much he loved her and thankfully, she clearly felt the same.

After some soul-searching, Goodman realised he needed to be with the woman he loved so decided to leave Saint Marie so he could be with her.

In real life though, the actor Kris Marshall left the show because it had become “impractical”.

Speaking to RadioTimes shortly after leaving the show, he said: “It’s something my wife and I discussed three or four years ago

“When I was first offered the job, my son was six months old and my wife wasn’t working, so it was a very easy decision.

“We decided I would do Death in Paradise for a few years until it became impractical.

“It was always quite a finite thing. I certainly didn’t hide it from anyone I work with. I’m going to miss it terribly. There have already been times when I’ve thought to myself, ‘Have I made the right decision?’”

Death in Paradise will welcome new detective Parker, who will take on the leading role after actor Ardal O’Hanlon announced he would be leaving the show in the New Year.

In a statement, he said: “It’s something my wife and I discussed three or four years ago,” Marshall said.

Death in Paradise will return to BBC One in January 2020.
