NEW York City Mayor Bill de Blasio believes Jeffrey Epstein’s prison death was suspicious and says “something doesn’t fit”.

Mr de Blasio says something was amiss just one day after a leading pathologist said the billionaire paedo’s body bore telltale signs of murder.

Jeffrey Epstein was found dead in his prison cell in Manhattan

Epstein’s shock death came two weeks after he was placed on suicide watch when he was found nearly unconscious in his cell with injuries to his neck.

Conspiracy theories surrounding his possible murder, which allege was covered up, grew after it emerged that prison guards did not check on his cell as they should have done and security cameras failed to work.

Mr de Blasio said: “Something doesn’t fit here.

“It just doesn’t make sense that the highest profile prisoner in America, you know, someone forgot to guard him.

“I want to understand, I think everyone wants to understand what really happened. I don’t know what the nature of the death was.

“I just know it should never have happened, and we still don’t have good answers.”

Epstein was awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges at a federal prison in New York when he was found dead on the morning of August 10.

New York’s chief medical examiner Dr Barbara Sampson announced the death was a “suicide”.

But Dr Sampson’s predecessor, Dr Michael Baden made a bombshell claim Epstein didn’t kill himself.

This came after he carried out his own autopsy on behalf of the disgraced financier’s family.

Yesterday a summary of his findings was published.

An autopsy picture, right, shows he suffered a fracture on his hyoid bone

Pictures from the autopsy show Epstein suffered two fractures — one on the left and another on the right sides of his larynx.

A third fracture can also be seen on his left hyoid bone — just above the Adam’s apple. This can break during hanging, but is more common in strangulation victims.

Dr Baden told Fox News: “Hanging does not cause these broken bones. Homicide does.”

The pathologist, who’s probed cases involving OJ, JFK and Martin Luther King, also said the neck fractures were “rare” .

But Dr Sampson said she “firmly” stands by her findings.

She added: “The original medical investigation was thorough and complete. There is no reason for a second medical investigation by our office.”

Epstein’s death was also seized upon by conspiracy theorists because of the disgraced financier’s high-profile friends, which included Prince Andrew and Bill Clinton.
