Even If You Pre-Ordered Google’s Stadia Founder’s Edition, You May Not Be Playing On Day 1

Google Makes Gaming Announcement During Keynote At Gaming Industry Conference GDC

Yesterday, Google replaced the sold-out Stadia Founder’s Edition with a new, extremely similar version, the Premiere Edition. Players who were pre-ordering that version a month ahead of its November 19 release had a question, would they too be able to play on day one?

Well, funny story…

When pressed by The Verge, Google has said that not only will Premiere Edition players not get their units on day one, it’s also possible that even if you ordered a Founder’s Edition, you may also not get it on November 19 either, as they are being shipped out based on the order in which they were received.

Google points to the wording of a recent blog post they published. Emphasis mine:

“Stadia Founder’s Edition will start arriving on gamers’ doorsteps on November 19, 2019. If you were one of the first gamers who pre-ordered and have received your Founder’s Editions, you’ll be able to buy and play your favorite games beginning at 9AM PST/5PM BST/6PM CET on November 19.”

And yet this is kind of the opposite of the tweet about the Founder’s and Premiere editions from yesterday which says plainly:

“That's a wrap! Stadia Founder’s Edition has completely sold out. We can’t wait to welcome all of our Founders to play Stadia on November 19.”

But…all of the Founders won’t be playing on November 19, it seems.

Google says that they expect all orders for both the Founder’s and Premiere editions will be shipped within the first two weeks of launch, which would be by December 3, though it seems pretty clear that most Founder’s purchasers assumed that they would be playing the console on launch day. There does not appear to be a way to check exactly when your order will arrive at this point, but that will likely change as we get closer to launch.

Eventually Stadia is going to be launching on browsers and tablets and PCs and you won’t need any of this hardware to play it, but that isn’t until 2020. For now, it’s going to be the early adopters who give it a try first, and we’ll get to see how this grand concept works in practice, particularly when paired with the lovely data caps in place all around the US. Next fall will mark the actual launch of PlayStation 5 and the next Xbox consoles, and I am curious to see what state Stadia will be in then, whether it will have sparked a revolution or faded from relevance. Or somewhere in between.
