5 top tech points on the new BMW 1 Series

Chronicle Live 2 weeks ago

The BMW 1 Series is highly known for being one of the UK’s best-selling cars, being a very important model for the firm.

Of course range-topping models like the BMW 7 Series and X7 really show the level of luxury that the brand has to offer but the latest 5-door 1 series has a great amount of tech fitted and can definitely meet the standard that is set across the range but for a more affordable price.

We pick out five of our favourite key tech points on the latest edition of the popular hatchback.

Your own Personal Assistant

This new innovative feature was introduced back in March and sees drivers and passengers joined by an intelligent, digital character that responds to the prompt “Hey BMW”.

The infotainment-based personal assistant will be able to learn your preferences and favourite settings – such cabin temperature, routines and destinations and cabin temperature – while also keeping drivers updated with traffic information and finding available car parks nearby.

This is only the start of a new era for the BMW Group – aiming to have drivers being able to operate their car and access its functions and information simply by speaking.

Unlocking the car via your smartphone

Keyless entry has been around for quite some time now, currently being available on many new premium cars. But BMW has taken that step further with the 1 Series, introducing the ‘Digital Key’. This makes it easy to unlock your car using a compatible smartphone using NFC (Near Field Communication) technology.

Even more impressive, if the driver’s phone is next to the door handle, the car can be unlocked even if the phone is off.

When placing the phone in the wireless charging tray, this will be able to turn on the cars engine. BMW ensures strict security from the BMW connected app.

The Driving Assistant package

While the BMW 1 Series does come with autonomous emergency braking and lane-keep assist as standard, the Driving Assistant Package will ensure the hatchback is awarded a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating.

Gaining blind spot monitoring, cross traffic alert and rear collision warning from this package – this can stop your car from changing lanes if there is a vehicle in your blind spot.

All the help you need to find a parking space

BMW’s Parking Space Assistant is included as part of the connected satellite navigation system, which offers a selection of parking options in advance as well as suggested routes and car parks with availability so you’re more likely to find a space.

Reversing assistant

Narrow lanes or tight parking spaces can be a difficult situation to get yourself out of, but this is where the ‘ Reversing assistant’ from BMW’s 1 Series can help.

Currently the only model in its class available with the feature, it is able to memorise the car’s last steering angles even at speeds up to 22mph and reverse the car on the same route for up to 50 metres.

The steering is controlled from the assisted feature, leaving the driver to focus on the surroundings and the speed of the car.
