Matthew Whitaker was very much a Trump loyalist when he served as acting attorney generation of the United States in late 2018/early 2019 following the firing of former Attorney General Jeff Sessions. And with President Donald Trump now facing an impeachment inquiry in the House of Representatives, Whitaker is as much of a loyalist as ever — and he demonstrated as much during a Tuesday appearance on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle.”
Trying to pressure a foreign leader, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, into digging up dirt on a political rival — former Vice President Joe Biden — as well as his son Hunter Biden is a serious matter. But when Whitaker spoke to far-right “Ingraham Angle” host Laura Ingraham on Tuesday, both of them insisted that Trump’s actions were perfectly innocent.
Whitaker said to Ingraham, “Abuse of power is not a crime…. The Constitution is pretty clear that this has to be some pretty egregious behavior. And they cannot tell the American people what this case is even about.”
The former acting attorney general implied that Trump is being railroaded by Democrats, telling Ingraham, “I think it’s not good for the republic, especially 13 months before we have another election…. This is just not good for the republic.”

Ingraham described the impeachment inquiry as “corrosive,” asserting that House Democrats are falsely “casting themselves as the white knights.”
Trump, Whitaker told Ingraham, has “completely upset the apple cart” politically and is being wrongly “punished” for it.
Whitaker’s statements are being lambasted by Trump critics on Twitter. @MsMariaT asserted, “It’s shocking that he actually passed a bar exam, somewhere, anywhere,” while @lifesafeast posted that Whitaker is “willing to do literally anything for a few minutes of fame and a buck.”
