A U.S. Marine from Cook County was killed Sunday morning during a training exercise in California, according to the Marine Corps.
Pfc. Christian Bautista, 21, was pronounced dead at the scene after a tactical vehicle accident at the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center in Bridgeport, California, according to a news relesae. Bautista was a motor vehicle operator serving as a vehicle turret gunner assigned to 1st Transportation Support Battalion, Combat Logistics Regiment 1, 1st Marine Logistics Group at the time of the accident about 7:15 a.m.
“Our primary concern is for the Marine we’ve lost, his family, friends, and fellow Marines and sailors,” said Brig. Gen. Roberta L. Shea, commanding general of 1st Marine Logistics Group, in a statement. “We have them in our prayers and will exhaust all resources to aid them during this difficult time.”
Two Marines from Bautista’s vehicle worked to try to save his life before paramedics arrived, according to the release.
Bautista, who enlisted in the Marine Corps in September 2018, was assigned to the 1st Transport Support Battalion at Camp Pendleton, California, in May 2019.
The accident was under investigation, according to the release.
