Parents of teen killed in crash refuse to meet US diplomat’s wife at White House

The parents of a British biker allegedly killed by a US diplomat’s wife driving on the wrong side of the road refused to meet the woman during a visit with President Trump at the White House.

After their meeting Tuesday, the mom of tragic biker Harry Dunn told reporters that she was “shocked” when the president revealed that Anne Sacoolas was in the next room and was willing to meet the grieving family.

“The bombshell was dropped soon after we walked in the room,” Charlotte Charles told reporters about the moment she found out that the woman was nearby, according to the Guardian.

“We made it very clear that, as we’ve said all along, we will meet with her and we would still love to meet with her but it has to be on our terms and on UK soil,” she said.

“We were a bit shocked but it didn’t really make any difference to us, to be perfectly honest. She could have been two miles away; it’s just she was in the room next door,” Charlotte continued.

“Our grief’s been locked in for several weeks. It’s not appropriate to meet her without therapists and mediators for us as a family but also for her. How can it be comfortable for her to be thrown into a situation like that without therapists and mediators?”

Asked if they considered the plan as a “stunt,” Dunn hesitated before answering: “No, I don’t think so. I would think maybe they were trying to force it on to us but I still think the president was sincere at the end when he spoke to Charlotte.”

Charles said she asked the president to see the matter from her perspective.

“Upon leaving the meeting and ending the meeting, I said, ‘If it was your 19-year-old son, or your son no matter what age, you would be doing the same as me.’ And he actually grabbed hold of my hand little bit tighter and he said, ‘Yes, I would be. Maybe we’ll try and push this from a different angle,’” she said.

Dunn, 19, was killed Aug. 27 when Sacoolas’ Volvo struck his motorcycle head-on while she drove on the wrong side of a Northamptonshire road, authorities allege.

The US diplomat’s wife left the UK after the accident despite telling authorities that she did not plan to do so — and was then granted diplomatic immunity.

Trump has called the accident “terrible,” noting that motorists in the US and UK drive on opposite sides of the road.

During the meeting, the president initially rejected the likelihood of Sacoolas returning to the UK, without giving a reason, but he later signaled a possible shift later in their conversation, according to the Guardian.

“I feel like we’ve got a little bit of progress. We didn’t get the answers that we wanted. They couldn’t tell us who made the decision to let her come back to the US,” Charles said.

She said her son would have been “proud” of his parents making their case directly with the president.

“He was always one to stand up for his rights when he knew he was in the right,” Charles said.
