More than 1,290 people were arrested during a week of protests

Arrests were made outside Billingsgate Market after a group stopped traffic from entering. One protester was chained to the gate while calling for a ban on fishing and farming. A tweet by the group called it a vigil for the trillions of fish killed for food each year. More than 1,290 people had been arrested during a week of protests, with organiser Extinction Rebellion accused on Twitter after its logo was apparently daubed on a memorial to First World War Army Commander Field Marshal Earl Haig.

At least 500 officers were drafted from forces as far away as Edinburgh, with Police Scotland sending around 100.

Chief Constable Iain Livingstone denied it would impact policing in Scotland and said: “Scotland has benefited from mutual aid in the past and will do so again in the future. It’s therefore appropriate that, as the UK’s second biggest police service, we supply officers when asked to do so.”

A Met Police officer tweeted: “After a 16 hour shift today I have had my day off tomorrow cancelled for another 4am start. I appreciate people have the right to protest but it needs to be legal.

“This will be my third night sleeping in my van.”

Those arrested included Belgian Princess Esmeralda Dereth, 63, the daughter of the late Leopold III of Belgium. She told Belgian newspaper L’Echo: “The more people from all sections of society protest, the greater the impact will be.”
