Mirror Online 1 month ago

Two hero unarmed police community support officers attempted to confront the Manchester Arndale attacker who had a large knife.

The suspect then chased them with the knife as they called for help, police confirmed.

Other officers - both armed and unarmed - responded quickly and within five minutes the suspect was detained outside the shopping centre.

He has since been arrested on suspicion of terrorism, Greater Manchester Police have said.

Police were called at 11.15am to reports of a stabbing and the suspect, who is in his 40s, was detained and three people were taken to hospital with stab injuries.

Witnesses described a scene of terror as shoppers, some with injuries, sought refuge in stores.

Talking about how unarmed community officers intervened, Assistant Chief Constable Russ Jackson said: "At 11.15am this morning, a man entered the Arndale shopping centre in Manchester city centre.

"He was armed with a large knife and as he entered Exchange Court began lunging, attacking people with the knife.

"Two unarmed police community support officers were in Exchange Court and attempted to confront the attacker.

"He then chased them with the knife as they were calling for urgent assistance.

"The man attacked people around him and we understand five people were injured by him.

"Although the injuries are nasty, we are told that, thankfully, none are life-threatening."

Mr Jackson added: "Other officers both armed and unarmed quickly responded and within five minutes he was challenged and detained by armed officers on Market Street outside the Arndale Centre.

"He was initially arrested for serious assaults.

"He was taken to police custody and has now been arrested on suspicion of commission, preparation and instigation of an act of terrorism.

"We do not know the motivation for this terrible attack. It appears random, is certainly brutal and of course extremely frightening for anyone who witnessed it.

"We have arrested the man, a male in his 40s, on suspicion of terrorism because of the nature and circumstances of this attack."

He added that investigators did not believe anyone else to be involved in the attack.

Greater Manchester Police initially stated five people had been injured, but later amended the figure to four.

A 19-year-old woman and another woman for whom no age was given were both taken to hospital with stab injuries and their condition was described as stable by the force.

A man in his 50s was also hospitalised with stab wounds, while a woman in her 40s was treated by paramedics at the scene but was not stabbed.
