AKRON, Ohio – The principal of Akron East High School faces termination after being accused of twice striking a student who called him a “lazy ass bitch.”
The Akron School Board voted unanimously on Monday to begin the process for firing Vyrone Finney, 48, who had been on paid leave since September. As of Monday, Finney was placed on unpaid leave.
The district’s investigation into Finney is still ongoing, but the school board reviewed evidence and found that Finney’s actions constituted “good and just cause for termination” and were found to be in violation of several district policies and guidelines, according to the resolution.
If Finney does not request an appeal hearing within 10 days, the school board will vote on whether to terminate his contract at its Dec. 9 meeting.
The Sept. 19 incident involved a 15-year-old boy and was witnessed in part by Akron police officers, according to a police report. Finney has not been charged with a crime, according to police and court records.
The student got into an argument with his English teacher, and when ordered to go to a so-called buddy room or the principal’s office, the student chose to go to Finney’s office, according to a police report. Finney and the student called the student’s mother, and according to the student, Finney said he would be disciplined with one-class period of in-school suspension, the police report said.
Finney escorted the student to the in-school suspension room and told the supervisor that the student would be spending the rest of the day there. The student argued with Finney, saying they had agreed he could go back to his regular classes after one class period, police said.
Their argument escalated and the student commented on how tight Finney’s suit was, to which Finney laughed and said he got it from the student’s mother, according to the police report.
Police arrived and reported seeing Finney tell the student he would be suspended for three days, police said. The student asked to see the paperwork regarding his suspension.
“Mr. Finney then tells him he will be suspended for 10 days if he makes him do paperwork,” the report says.
The student called Finney a “lazy ass bitch” and stood up to leave the school, when Finney hit him twice with an open hand to the face before officers separated them, police said. The student then went home.
Finney told officers he thought the student was going to attack him, according to the report.
“I was not in the mood to be called a bitch today,” he told officers, according to the report.
The school board’s resolution called for Finney’s firing cited his “failure to exercise due care to protect the mental and physical safety of students; physically striking a student; use of unreasonable force and fear in student discipline; provoking and engaging in a physical altercation with a student, exposing the student to disparagement and embarrassment; and exercising poor judgment throughout the September 19, 2019 incident.”
