World of Hyatt launched another promotion last month, allowing members to buy points at a 25% discount for purchases of 5,000 points or more through October 10, 2023.
Members can buy up to 55,000 points every calendar year before any possible bonuses, and Hyatt has multiple opportunities throughout the year for buying points.
Even though this promotion is ending tomorrow, I don’t think there is an urgent rush to make some kind of purchase.
Hyatt – just like most other hotel chains – is frequently selling points, and there is a way to use them strategically for key properties that are usually quite expensive.
You can access this offer and check your bonus or discount on Hyatt’s website here.
World of Hyatt points sales usually offer a maximum 40% bonus or 30% discount during regular sales. This current campaign with a 25% bonus isn’t excellent, but it is definitely acceptable.
Here is an example of buying an allotment of 30,000 points under the current campaign:
The cost of a World of Hyatt point purchased under this offer at a 25% discount is 1.8 cents each. During the lowest previous sale in the past, the price of a point was 1.68 cents.
You can buy up to 55,000 points per year, which is also the maximum under this campaign. Last time around (the promotion that ended on August 11th), Hyatt doubled the amount of points you could buy to 110k, but that’s not the case this time around.
Does it make sense to purchase points at this price?
It only makes sense if you use them at costly Hyatt properties such as the Park Hyatt Maldives, Kyoto, or Tokyo. However, sometimes the lower category properties can often make sense when the paid rates are high. Otherwise, buying at such a high price makes only limited sense.
Also – as many like to use points for Park Hyatt Tokyo while rates climbed as high as $1,300/night – keep in mind the property is currently restricting the standard room inventory and, with that, the award availability. Park Hyatt Tokyo will close for an extensive renovation in the Spring of 2024.
Award rooms with Hyatt are available for sale as long as standard rooms are available. This means that points are usually a good value if something is going on in the city, pushing revenue rates through the roof.
It’s worthwhile to check what the current points rates are if you have a particular stay in mind.
Hyatt also just started the Fall promotion for stays at their properties (including award stays):
BEGINS TODAY: World Of Hyatt “Bonus Journeys” For Stays October 6 – November 30, 2023
With Hyatt now having Peak/Off-Peak awards, there is no longer a firm amount of points, and this can make or break the case if it’s worthwhile to redeem, let alone buy points.
Conclusion
Hyatt continuously sells its points at a bonus or discount throughout the year. So, if you don’t need World of Hyatt points right now, you can buy them later. It is a good opportunity, however, to buy a medium amount of points if you have a particular redemption in mind.
Usually, Hyatt alternates between a discount and a bonus amount for the points purchases. This is a similar price to what they sold them last time. I would not necessarily recommend buying points unless you need them right now, as there are usually more attractive sales around Thanksgiving or 11.11 promotions.
