India v Pakistan: Preview
Venue: Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne
Date: October 23, 2022
Time: 1pm PKT/1.30pm IST/7pm local time
It’s hard to ignore the pre-match buildup, even if you don’t particularly enjoy all the anticipation, drama and histrionics that accompany every India-Pakistan game. Both teams are set to play at the iconic MCG, one of the highest-scoring grounds in Australia (statistically, in T20s). The bounce will be good, shots will come off well, but the big boundaries will definitely be a challenge.
India would feel the pinch of missing a certain Jasprit Bumrah, but the game will be so much more than about one absence. Their bowling, particularly at the death, could be tested to the hilt, and the strike rates of KL Rahul and Virat Kohli could play a defining role in which side of the result India ends up.
For Pakistan, Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan are their two imposing batting pillars, but much has been said about their unthreatening rate of scoring, which puts more load on those to follow. Things look much more settled now, with Shan Masood at three and two reliable No.4 options in Mohammad Nawaz and Shadab Khan. The pace battery looks fine, as always, bolstered significantly by the return of Shaheen Afridi, whose opening burst set the tone for the 2021 fixture in Dubai. There’s also the question of Shan Masood’s fitness, he injured himself in the nets two days ago after being hit by a ball.
