Mum found abusive ex with restraining order living in loft despite moving 10 times

An abusive ex boyfriend has been jailed again after breaking a restraining order and secretly staying in his former girlfriend's loft.

Aaron Chidgey, 25, was banned by two court orders from going near Amy Birch’s house in Exeter, but he climbed in through her balcony window and hid in the attic.

Amy, 20, had already moved 10 times to hide from him after suffering his abuse and violence.

Amy said: "I was sickened to discover Aaron had been in my home for God knows how long, I had no idea.

"My fear is that he will stop at nothing to hurt me. I have moved 10 times in the last year to hide from him but he always finds me."

Chidgey has been jailed for 15 months after breaking second restraining order

Amy first spotted him outside one of her windows and, on the second time, she saw his legs dangling out of the loft.

She also realised she had an unwelcome visitor because Aaron could not be bothered to do his own washing up and he left dirty plates in the kitchen.

Chidgey had just been released from prison for previous assaults on Amy and breaches of a non-molestation order, but he broke into her home when she was out.

The pair first met when Amy became homeless in Exeter aged 17. Chidgey offered her protection.

Amy was subjected to physical assaults by Aaron, including being pinned down in the street

On her second night on the streets, Chidgey took Amy to his street camp shared with some friends and she stayed in his tent.

She said: “All I wanted was someone to protect me and take me under their wing.”

They quickly became a couple and Amy raised enough money for them to rent a flat. It was shortly after they moved in that Chidgey became abusive in August 2017.

On one occasion he pinned Amy down on the street for which he was imprisoned for seven months.

After his release he moved back in with Amy and she fell pregnant, prompting her to end their relationship to keep their child safe.

She added: “I couldn’t allow myself to be hurt and dominated by this man anymore I had a baby to protect.

“But the next 18 months were a nightmare. Everywhere I went to hide he found me.

Aaron was jailed again for assaulting Amy during which time she fell pregnant with a second child after a fling with a friend.

The father of her second baby was too frightened of Chidgey to stick around and he disappeared.

After his most recent release, Chidgey broke his restraining order again and broke into Amy’s home, stealing blankets and a duvet to sleep in the attic.

Eventually, when Amy saw Chidgey, she “screamed for him to get out” and he told her he hoped she would “lose that dirty baby” before fleeing the flat, she said.

Exeter Crown Court jailed Chidgey on November 8 for 15 months.

His restraining order has been extended until 2024.

Amy said: “He’ll only serve four months but this time they are keeping better tabs on him.

“At the moment I feel safe because he is locked up. But I don’t want anyone else to feel the fear I live with.

“I want to tell other women there is help out there if you look for it.

“I want other women to know they are worthy of love and support.

“I am learning it for myself now and I want to raise my two boys to always respect women and treat people with kindness.”
