A 7-year-old girl is in critical condition after she was shot in the neck and chest by someone in a Jason mask while trick-or-treating with her family Thursday in Chicago.
The Halloween incident happened at around 5:30 p.m. in Little Village on the city’s West Side when a group chasing a man opened fire on the street, shooting the man and the 7-year-old girl in the process, Police Sgt. Rocco Alioto said.
The gunman, who was wearing a red shirt and a face mask, yelled an insult to the Latin King gang, and opened fire from an alley across the street. He was targeting a Latin Kings member who was near the girl, the Chicago Tribune reported.
Police said the man, 30, was shot in the hand, but is in stable condition.
The 7-year-old girl was shot in the chest and neck, and was transported to the hospital in critical condition, Alioto said.
Chicago police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said the shooter was wearing a “Jason” Halloween mask, according to the Tribune. Jason Voorhees was the fictional hockey-mask wearing killer from the “Friday the 13th” slasher films. Johnson added that a person of interest who may be the gunman has been identified based on camera footage and tips from the community.
“This is unacceptable. A 7-year-old girl that was trick-or-treating with her family had to get shot because a group of guys wanted to shoot at another male while there was a street full of kids trick-or-treating,” Alioto said.
The gunman and two others fled down the alley following the incident.
Lali Lara, 25, who works in a cell phone store in the 3700 block of West 26th St., where the incident occurred, heard the child’s father screaming that his daughter had been shot. Lara then ran towards the wounded girl, who was wearing a red and black costume, she told the Chicago Tribune.
Lara added that she held the girl’s hand and applied pressure on her chest to help with the bleeding as they waited for an ambulance to transport her to the hospital.
Video posted by NBC Chicago shows the disturbing moment gunfire rang out.
A group of people can be seen moving away from the camera, with some going around corner and out of the video frame. As seven gunshots ring out, people stop running, turn around run back toward the camera and past the person recording.
The man shot had a history of assault and drug charges, and refused to cooperate with police following the incident, officials said, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Detectives are asking anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
“It shouldn’t happen anywhere. It shouldn’t happen in the city,” Alioto said of the incident.
