The crash happened just after 10:30pm but police were not called to the scene until 5:12 the following morning, when the two 18-year-old college students were found in the wreckage.

An inquest into their deaths heard PC Andrew Hammans was the first officer to arrive at the scene on the A30 near Hook, Hants. on the morning of April 28.

He was then approached by the father of Ella who said he believed his daughter may be in the car.

Hammans broke down in tears while attempting to read his statement, which was then read by coroner Andrew Bradley.

In it he said: “I went to the driver's side door. As soon as I looked in I knew it was likely to be a fatal due to the damage.

“The driver's door was crushed into the car and into the centre console.

“There was no way either of the people was alive.”

A black box data recorder inside the vehicle showed had visited a branch of McDonalds in Basingstoke at 9:42 in the evening.

It hit speeds of around 73mph on the journey home before the car suddenly mounted the car’s grassy central reservation.

Driver Ella lost control slamming into a tree at 35mph.

A toxicology report found she had a small amount of alcohol in her blood, but it was less than a quarter the drink-drive limit. She also had a therapeutic level of the anti-depressant Citalopram in her body.

Recording a verdict of accidental death coroner Bradley said: “These were two young girls with everything to live for.

"The only comfort I can give to the families is that the girls would not have suffered. There was nothing compatible with life after those injuries.
