Japan’s death toll from Typhoon Hagibis rises to 58

New York Post Incident 0 month ago

Japan’s death toll from Typhoon Hagibis has reached 58, as thousands of homes remained without power and temperatures were expected to drop later this week, according to public broadcaster NHK.

Fifteen people are also still missing — three days after the powerful storm ravaged the central and eastern portion of the country with high winds and flooding rains.

The worst hit area was north of Tokyo in Fukushima prefecture, where 18 people died, including a mother who was swept away by flood waters with her two children.

One of the children was confirmed dead Monday, while the other remained unaccounted for.

Much of the destruction in the area was caused by flooding after levees burst along the Abukuma River, which passes through a number of cities.

Roughly 130,000 households are still without water, while 24,000 are lacking electricity, which could spell trouble later this week when unseasonably low temperatures are expected.
