Armed cops raid Manchester home of man arrested over Arndale Centre machete attack

ARMED police have  stormed the home of the man accused of the Arndale shopping centre machete attacks.

Neighbours said 17 police cars descended on the 41-year-old’s home in the Manchester suburb of Harpurhey — a few hours after he allegedly stabbed three people.

One said: “I’ve never seen anything like it. It was mayhem. I had seen online pictures of the man being arrested and thought ‘That’s my next-door neighbour!’

“I was absolutely gobsmacked. He’s a friendly, peaceful man. Not the sort to cause any trouble. I knew he had mental health problems but he never gave us any bother.”

The suspect is being held under the Mental Health Act. He is a British national and not previously known to MI5 or counter-terrorism police.

Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham said yesterday: “This would appear to be more mental health-related than political or religious motivated.

“But of course we need to allow the police to conduct their full inquiries and keep an open mind until that work is complete.”

Chloe McGurk, 19, of Glengormley, Northern Ireland, was stabbed in her arm and armpit and is still recovering in hospital.

A man aged 59 was slashed in the hand and a woman of 33 was wounded in the stomach.

Police yesterday praised an Arndale security guard and a member of the public who pounced on the attacker and helped subdue him as he randomly lunged at shoppers.

Greater Manchester Police Assistant Chief Constable Russ Jackson said: “We do not know the motivation for this terrible attack.

“It appears random, it is certainly brutal and of course extremely frightening for anyone who witnessed it.”
