BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) – Elmer Enrique Amaya Gonzales, 20, of Honduras will be spending almost three and a half years behind bars after a sentence was handed down by U.S.
District Judge Brian A. Jackson. The sentence came after Gonzales was found guilty of possession of firearms by an alien illegally and unlawfully in the United States.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the conviction stems from an incident that took place on June 4, 2022. On that day, deputies with the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office reportedly investigated an armed robbery that took place on Innovation Park Drive. During the investigation, “the victims stated that they were outside discussing the day’s upcoming work schedule when they were approached by three armed Hispanic males who demanded their possessions,” officials said.
The DOJ stated that video footage helped detectives determine that the suspects likely fled the scene in a Toyota Corolla. The car was reportedly found later along with Gonzales on Bayou Fountain Avenue. The Honduran man was taken into custody.
Officials said a search of the vehicle uncovered these items:
- Masks
- Rifle magazines
- Rifle ammunition
- .22 caliber pistol
- Rifle
- Honduran passport
Gonzales will be taken back to Honduras at the end of his sentence.
