ARE you heading home for the festive season?

Now is the time to book trains, as most operators have just released tickets right up until Christmas Eve — with great discounts on early bookings.

Cut the cost of your Christmas train travel with our top tips[/caption]

But here I also have some other top tips for saving on train fares . . .

GET A RAILCARD: A range of discount cards are offered by National Rail. Those for 16-25 year-olds and 26-30 year-olds, as well as the Two Together card — the couples card where the discount applies only if you travel together — all give a third off any standard and first-class anytime, off-peak and advance fares and cost £30 each for the year.  For the same price, you can get the Family & Friends card, for up to four adults and four kids, which grants a third off most adult fares and 60 per cent off kids’ tickets. But it doesn’t work at peak times.

CASH IN ON CASHBACK: If you sign up today for the £30 railcard for 16-25 year-olds as a new member of cashback site quidco.com, you get £15 back. The card then gets you a 33-per-cent discount. So if you buy a £45 ticket you save £15 with the card and, if you add the cashback, that is your railcard paid — and you still get a third off all future tickets for the year. Deal ends this Sunday — but only 2,000 cards available.

TICKET-SPLITTING: Booking separate tickets for separate parts of your journey seems complex but can deliver big savings. Manually it can be tricky, but use a website to do the hard work for you. Traintickets.com is a new site that does it. But I tried it for a few journeys and it wasn’t always the cheapest, so do compare with the National Rail website.

DON’T GET CAUGHT OUT: Use comparison websites to help find you a good fare but they also might have hidden costs. Trainline.com charges up to £1.50 a time and redspottedhanky.com bookings have a £1.50 fee. It is worth it if you make a huge saving but it is good to be aware of that extra cost.
