How to cut your fuel costs as supermarkets and petrol stations hike their prices – plus win FREE tickets to The Bear Grylls Adventure worth £80

RISING fuel costs driving up your weekly spend?

It was revealed last weekend some supermarkets and petrol stations are “charging 4p per litre more than they should be’’, according to the RAC.

As fuel prices go up – here are some top tips to cut your costs

While prices fell by just under 1p a litre in September, the RAC’s latest Fuel Watch report says falling wholesale prices would allow for a further 4p per litre saving that is not being passed on.

Cut the cost of your trips with these tidy tips.

Compare the cost. Find the cheapest fuel in your area on a comparison site.

In Southampton, one Shell petrol station has unleaded petrol for 126.9p per litre. Just down the road, petrolprices.com reveals, Asda charges 123.9 a litre. So 20 litres would cost £25.38 at the Shell but £24.78 at Asda.

With this 60p saving each week, you would save £31.20 over a year.

Combine your errands. After being parked for a few hours, your car engine is cold. So when you first start it, the engine uses more fuel over the first five miles. If you can, combine your daily tasks into one big trip.

Maintenance is key. Motoring experts at leasevan.co.uk say regular upkeep of your vehicle will get all the systems working as efficiently as possible.

The firm says: “Checking your tyre pressures regularly can improve efficiency. Under-inflated tyres can cause you to use up to two per cent more fuel.”

Boot it out. Clean out your car. The heavier it is, the more fuel it needs. Heavy items such as prams and sports equipment are the worst culprits, as it is often less bother to leave them in there. But you will pay for the luxury.

Slow down. Any time you shave off your journey by going faster may cost you money.

According to the AA, driving at 70mph can use up to nine per cent more fuel than driving at 60mph, and up to 15 per cent more than driving at 50mph.
