The XFL’s comeback attempt for the 2020 season is indeed well underway and there’s no more concrete proof that the league is really returning to the field than the unveiling of uniforms for all eight teams.

Each of the teams that will be taking part in the 2020 campaign all took time on December 3rd to reveal their uniform set for the upcoming season. I’m pleased to say that there’s actually some good stuff to be excited about here from a uniform standpoint. None of the uniforms were terrible, which is always a positive.

From a personal standpoint, the best uniform set of the bunch belongs to the DC Defenders. The team was already on solid ground after making the wise decision of basing their identity around the DC flag. All they had to do was come up with some tasteful uniforms and they did just that. I’m not a fan of the monochrome look (and we’re going to see a lot of that in the XFL) but in the case of DC’s uniforms, it actually works out in their favor.

The XFL definitely took a lot of chances when it comes to helmet design and for the most part, it’s not bad. The St. Louis Battlehawks pulled off a neat trick when they wrapped their primary logo around the helmet. Normally when teams have done this as of late, it just consists of super-sizing a logo and plastering it all over the helmet. Instead, the wings are utilized in a similar manner to how the Philadelphia Eagles designed their helmet and the sword in the middle of the logo serves as a helmet stripe. It’s unique and it works in a good way for the Battlehawks.

While the Seattle Dragons also have a helmet design that’s both daring and experimental, they did themselves no favors when it came to any attempt of distancing themselves from the UAB Blazers football team. It’s an interesting-looking helmet for sure but it’s also something that’s been done before and done better as well.

The New York Guardians have a look that’s both traditional and also modern. The striping pattern on the jerseys and pants are about as old-school as it gets, but the helmet’s design is definitely something you don’t see everyday. Fortunately for the Guardians, it comes off as looking unique in a good way instead of bringing down their identity. Additionally, the team is wearing gray jerseys for their road look, which technically means that we’re guaranteed a color-on-color game whenever the Guardians break out their road uniform.

The Guardians aren’t the only team to embrace black in their color scheme as well. Both the Dallas Renegades and the Los Angeles Wildcats will be wearing black jerseys and pants for their primary home uniform. The Wildcats will have a warmer look with orange and red as their secondary colors, while the Renegades go for the cooler color scheme by utilizing powder blue as a secondary color and helmet color as well. Either way, black is the central theme when it comes to their uniforms — a bit disappointing when their secondary colors are so vibrant.

You won’t have to worry about color being wasted when it comes to the Tampa Bay Vipers. Their home uniform is basically a celebration of green — the helmet is green, the jersey is green, the pants are green and they have a lighter shade of green to compliment the main shade of green. Combine this with the field color and you are going to be in for a rush of green when this team actually takes the field.

The Houston Roughnecks share something in common with the Guardians but it isn’t the color black. Instead, it’s gray — Houston will also have gray uniforms for road games. They will be wearing blue pants with a red stripe that matches the red stripe going up the side of the jersey. Overall, Houston’s look comes off as a bit outdated, with the aforementioned side stripe being a look that has been out of football uniform style for a long time. It’s not a great look and it’s a far cry from the old Oilers look that the Roughnecks logo was clearly inspired by.

Even though none of these looks are particularly spectacular, this is still a tolerable-looking league from a uniform standpoint. Nothing comes off as garish or just ugly and that alone counts as a positive for the XFL. While there’s definitely plenty of room for tweaks and other changes to be made, none of these teams really need to completely break things down and hit the reset button from the foundation. It’s a steady start for the XFL from both a logo and uniform standpoint and surely the league is hoping that this translates to success both on and off the field.
