Sense8 and World on Fire star Brian J Smith has publicly spoken about his sexuality for the first time, revealing he hid his sexuality from his family until he was 30.
The 38-year-old star, who is known to most as Will in Netflix smash Sense8, said that his Texas upbringing meant he had to hide his growing feelings towards men as a teenager.
Instead, he took his time to come out to his family, and channelled his frustrations into his work as an actor.
Speaking with Attitude Magazine, he said: ‘I could never be who I was. I was constantly having to check myself and make sure I wasn’t looking at someone too long or making someone feel uncomfortable.
‘I had to be very, very careful about telling people the truth about myself. It still reverberates. A lot of my work is about that.’
Thankfully, he found himself feeling more at ease with himself when he came out to his family aged 30 who, despite his hesitations, supported him the entire time.
‘I think that’s when I became OK with it, too,’ he added. ‘Just in terms of being, “Oh that’s the world, it’s not as dangerous as I thought it was”.’
His discussion comes ahead of the season finale of World on Fire this Sunday, and just months after Sense8 was controversially pulled from the Netflix line-up, despite being loved by viewers.
Brian is now appearing on new US action series Treadstone alongside British actor Jeremy Irvine, where he’s part of a CIA Operative in the world based on Jason Bourne and The Bourne Identity TV series.
A UK release date is not yet known.
Sense8 is available now on Netflix.
