Afghanistan have become the latest team to name their provisional squad for the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup starting next month in India.
Afghanistan squad: Team news
Hashmatullah Shahidi will lead the Afghan squad which also includes the returning duo of Naveen-ul-Haq and Azmatullah Omarzai. Naveen last played an ODI more than two years back in January 2021, while Omarzai is coming back from injury.
Like always, Afghanistan’s squad is defined by their famed spin trio of Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman. They also have the young left-arm chinaman Noor Ahmad for company as well for the World Cup.
The batting department will be spearheaded by their two 21-year-old openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, who have been breaking ODI batting records for fun lately.
This will be Afghanistan’s third appearance in the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup, having previously featured in the 2015 and 2019 editions. From the 15 games they have played across the two editions of the World Cup, Afghanistan have managed to win only one so far and would like to extend their tally this time around, where they will have favourable conditions for their style of cricket.
